Prologue - The Breaking
Some time in the not so distant future, the world as we know it is starting to unravel. The United States is mired in unwinnable wars, gas is scarce and the transportation system grinds to a halt. Homegrown terrorists take out the electric grid. Food is strictly rationed and distributed by the military. As citizens grow increasingly angry with the government, martial law is called in to maintain peace. And then things really start to get bad.
S1E1: The Refuge
Fifteen years have passed since the "Battle of Bangor," the brutal assault on a small Maine city that set off the shattering of Northern New England during The Breaking. Since then, David and Sam have lead a ragged group of refugees and set up home at an abandoned airforce based dubbed "The Refuge." And far south, John Prophet has continued his battle for freedom. But John Prophet's luck has about run out. Even as he attempts one more daring action, enemy soldiers crowd down around him. He is forced to make a difficult decision in a train station. And then, he sets his feet northward, and comes crashing in like a lightning storm to the bucolic life David and Sam have forged in The Refuge. Maria and Luke have grown up knowing only the austerity of The Refuge. What will they make of this mysterious stranger and the storm of danger that surrounds him?
S1E2: The Christening
Far from the safety of the Refuge lies the City of Corinth, a broken place that once called itself New York. From the ashes, John Prophet emerged, uniting disparate groups and pushing out rival gangs. The city lay in - well, not quite peace - but a state of sanctity for some years, before a new force entered: The Republic. But on this day, no one decries the Republic. These soldiers, with their guns and ships, are turning on electricity and promising freedom. There is music, parades, fireworks. No one sees the looming shadow behind them. No one sees that behind their promises of good will, lies an iron fist. While dark shadows grow behind the wake of a parade, Luke and Maria find themselves headed down an uncertain path, while all is not quiet outside the gates of the Refuge.
S1E3: The Road
Dawn is a dim glow on the horizon of the Refuge when savage cries echo from the horizon. Moments later, the chalky rain-starved land turns into an inferno that David and his motley survivors must stop at all costs. Further down the river, Prophet collapses into a heap and Luke runs off looking for help. As Prophet flits in and out of consciousness, he pushes Maria to make a decision that will change the path of everything to come. In the Republic, the fanfare of C-Day is over and Lucian, ever the loyal worker, heads back down for another day at the slag pits... But something's not right. Saul plays a dangerous game, charming the Republic's High Council and eeking secrets from the young boy Zeke.
S1E4: The Hermit
Having made her decision to continue on the journey, Maria follows John's direction and steers their canoe downriver. But evils lay before them in this torn land. In a bleak homely homestead in the woods, amidst stacks of rusted up junk cars and a hodge-podge hydro-mill, Maria and John encounter a monster - one that walks on two legs. Can they survive a horror of this hopeless age? Meanwhile, in the Republic, Lucian finds himself out of hope and alone in the sewers. All seems lost, until a man emerges from the deep, promising him a life of redemption if he only pledges fealty to God in heaven. Little does Lucian know that this wandering preacher is looking for something, too... And what they're looking for has the power to upset the equilibrium of their fair city and usher in the ultimate battle.
S1E5: The Believers
In the wake of the nightmare that was Tully's barn, Sam appears ready to go to battle. But there is no battle left, and no chance to help but to mop up the mess. Marc, a wounded young warrior from the Dwellers, tries to keep his lips tight about his homeland and his plight, but it's clear there are few options left but to plow forward, whatever the cost. Amos and Lucian escape the fire and conflagration with Paul, a strange man who bears witness to a coming holy war. Paul leads them to the home of his people - the Believers - who welcome them with open arms. Arms maybe a little too open. Zeke, awkwardly moving into a new role, tells a secret to Richard that sets unimaginable wheels into motion.
S1E6: The Crossing
Rage burns in David's blood, as hot and incendiary as the coals which lit the crops of The Refuge into a blaze that may leave his people hungry as the brutal winter comes on. As David and his buddy Chris careen on the biodiesel powered ATV "Moby," Sam, John and the youths land on shore nearby, and realize that a terrible and preventable tragedy is coming on. In the Republic, Lucian still searches desperately for Amos, and is asked to attend a secret meeting where Paul's full plans are revealed. Saul shows his true colors as well, and they are black, black, black.
S1E7: The Dwellers
With horrors behind them and uncertainty ahead of them, Luke and Maria must come to terms -- the road without each other is too frightening. Meanwhile, they have a new friend, one of the Dwellers who shows them beneath the surface of a world that has existed nearby to them their whole lives that they've never seen. While the youths bond, Prophet is dragged before the Dwellers and Refuge alike to confront his actions. Prophet makes one last plea, telling the story of his battles with the Republic and the dangers that confront everyone and makes a poignant case: do these angered tribes unite against a common enemy, or destroy the man who has wronged so many to get this far?
S1E8: The Revolt
The stage has been set for an incredible battle. John Prophet is locked up, awaiting his fate at the hands of the Dwellers' justice. Their "BOL" in rural Maine seems far, far away from the troubles afflicting old New York, but this feeling of safety is about to be annihilated. Because in an open field, as a band plays fiddle and Marc and Luke watch the stars, a darker shape looms on the horizon... And in the City, two forces rise up in mighty conflagration. The stakes are raised and the battle for the soul of the City is underway. Angels and devils appear in the streets and fire rains from the sky. When the smoke clears, there are victors and losers, and a long road yet ahead for Maria, Luke, and Marc.
